Breaking the Silence: Supporting Men’s Mental Health with Walk & Talk 4 Men
Trigger Warning: This article discusses mental health and suicide.
Did you know that 75% of all suicides are men? This sobering statistic underscores the urgent need for initiatives that support men’s mental health.
In recognition of Men’s Mental Health Month, we had the privilege of speaking with Justin Leigh, founder of Walk and Talk 4 Men St Neots. His initiative provides a safe and supportive space for men to connect, talk, and support each other. Here, Justin shares the journey that led him to start this life-changing group and the impact it continues to have.
What Inspired Justin to Start Walk & Talk 4 Men
Justin’s journey to founding Walk and Talk 4 Men was born out of a personal experience and a desire to make a difference.
"After leaving a high-stress corporate role post-pandemic, I found the mental health support available lacking. This realization, combined with seeing the impact of mental health challenges on men, motivated me to start the group in 2021 to create a supportive space for men to connect."
In a world where many men feel pressure to remain silent about their struggles, Justin’s group offers an environment where they can find understanding and solidarity.
Creating a “Safe Space”
One of the group’s key goals is to create a welcoming atmosphere for everyone who joins.
"Each week, we focus on ensuring new members feel welcomed. Our walk leaders greet everyone personally, encouraging them to open up as they feel comfortable. It’s about pairing men one-on-one for a relaxed walk where they can talk freely or simply listen."
This relaxed and informal approach helps men engage in meaningful conversations without pressure or judgment.
The Power of Community
Through his work, Justin has witnessed firsthand the transformative impact of community.
"The power of community and how much it benefits those involved has been a revelation. It’s been rewarding to see members not only receive support but actively contribute to helping each other."
By fostering mutual support, the group has become more than just a meeting place—it’s a source of strength for many participants.
Breaking the Stigma Around Men’s Mental Health
Justin emphasized the importance of addressing the barriers that prevent men from seeking help and the steps we can all take to support men’s mental health:
Why it’s hard for men to talk openly:
"Many men face societal pressure to stay strong and ‘tough.’ Our group counters this by fostering a culture of empathy, allowing men to be vulnerable without fear of judgment."
What he wishes people knew:
"Listening is crucial. Many men withdraw under stress, but talking is incredibly therapeutic. Our group offers a judgment-free space to encourage these open conversations."
How we can all help:
"Consistent, empathetic conversations can make all the difference. Sometimes it’s about gently encouraging someone to join in, knowing that persistence can lead to a positive outcome."
How to Get Involved
Justin and his team welcome all men to join their walks—no invite needed.
- Weekly Walks: Every Saturday at 9:15 am at Ambiance Cafe, Riverside Park. The walk starts at 9:30 am.
- Monthly Walks: On the third Sunday of every month at Little Paxton.
